Announcing October’s meat box…

I’m happy to announce that this month’s supplier is Riverford. Many of you will have heard of Riverford Farm as it already runs one of the UK’s largest organic vegetable box schemes, delivering close to 2.5 million boxes to households every year. What many of you might not know is that Riverford also delivers meat boxes.

Although the original Riverford Farm does not produce the meat itself, it has teamed up with local West Country farmers to create a network of certified suppliers that has helped the company to scale to the level that it has, while keeping food miles down and keeping employment local. The benefit for the end customer is that you could almost order all your groceries from the same place, which really does cut down on delivery, food miles, the sheer hassle of shopping and so on!

An impressive achievement for Riverford is they were recently crowned ‘Best Independent Retailer’ of 2011 in the RSPCA Good Business Awards, in recognition that the meat and dairy produce they sell are just as ethically sound as the veg that they grow. Here’s the video – literally of cows jumping for joy – that helped Riverford to gallop to victory:

And might I add that the PR team – wonderful Rachel and Vitha – have been so kind and patient in helping me pick the items for my box, which is arriving on Friday. EXCITEMENT.
